My Favorite Rose - January 2010

My Favorite Rose — Mrs. B. R. Cant, An Old Garden Rose – Tea By Bill Dority, January 2010

I love them all. But in the sense of the "Garden Rose", I would select Mrs. B. R. Cant. Tea, Medium Pink, 1901, flowers silvery rose; base suffused buff, reverse deep rose, double, cupped, moderate fragrance, vigorous growth. This rose has proved to be one of the most consistent performers in this area for me. I never spray her, and with adequate water, mulch and lots of sunshine she grows and blooms.

I recommend feeding her in March and August with one cup of fertilizer. I trim her in February and August for size and shape control. She responds very well to deadheading. Her stems are strong and her blossoms are firm for a couple of days, usually. She should be in every rose garden.

(Editor’s Note) We have a plant that is now quite old and is still doing well with minimal care.
