August 2010 Consulting Rosarian Report

August Consulting Rosarian Report
By Stuart Smith

Summer is long, hot and humid in Tallahassee. In August I work in my garden in the morning (if I have to) and stay in the cool air conditioned house in the afternoon.
My first recommendation is that you do the same.

My second recommendation is that you continue to spray regularly to prevent fungus, insect and mite damage.

My third recommendation is to water daily, if needed (showers of rain are not enough).

My fourth recommendation is to apply organic fer-tilizers liberally this month (they require weeks to be effective).

My fifth recommendation is to sharpen your prun-ing shears and loppers for Labor Day (and after) to ensure long stems and big, excellent blooms for the cool weather of October and November to which we all are looking forward.
